Lake Carey Welfare Association Meeting, May 15, 2011

The meeting was called to order by Ed Hetzel, vice president. President Walter Broughton is presently vacationing in Jordan.

The minutes were read and approved. Secretary, Ginny Tinner asked if there was anyone who would volunteer to take the minutes at the June 12th meeting. An acting secretary is still needed for that meeting.

Treasurer, Lou Bierly reported that there is $20,690.09 in the checking account and $31,671.58 in the savings account. There are presently 65 members for 2011, fifteen of which are new members. Lou also showed the new mug with a picture of the Lake Carey Train Station. They are $6 each, or two for $10. They will be available at his antique shop or at meetings. The treasurer’s report was approved.

A question about the $7,000 that was approved for Princeton-Hydro was asked. All of it has not been spent, nor will it be necessary to do so.

Phil Cable, from the USA Cycling Federation, who is organizing several bicycle races to be held at Lake Carey on Sunday, May 29, was introduced. He handed out the attached flyer which describes the races and included a map. He fielded a few questions and asked us for our cooperation. It was suggested that a mass e-mailing go out to everyone a week before to make sure everyone is aware of this day long event.

Ed reported on the Growing Greener Grant. $20,000 has been spent so far. An extension has been given to the end of 2011. Construction should begin within a month. Permits still need to be submitted.

Chris Ziemba, who has been working for many months to update our website, reported that it has a whole new look and is up and running. Everything from the old site is still included in the buttons. Newsletters, minutes, and videos are available.

New Business

Hank Fells has submitted a proposal for welcome signs around the lake. Three signs at $644 each will be installed free. One will be at each of the Route 29 entrances and one on the back road to Lake Carey. Barbara Beane made a motion to purchase the signs. Arthur Orloski seconded it. The motion passed.

Ed mentioned the order to proceed with the Act 537 Plan Update Study. Both Tunkhannock and Lemon Townships have agreed to pay for an updated plan. The previous one was not enforceable. The deadline for the plan to be completed is October 1. Trish Thatcher suggested that if you want to have some input, you should attend the township meetings. Tunkhannock meets on the first Monday at 7:00. Lemon meets on the first Tuesday at 7:00.

Barbara Beane made a motion that the LCWA write a letter be sent to PennDOT describing the condition of the roads, asking for them to be repaired. She volunteered to write the letter. Paul Brown seconded it. The motion passed.

Ginny Tinner suggested that the September meeting be on Labor Day weekend when most people are at the lake. It was tabled until more people could be present.

Paul Brown mentioned that the Lake Carey Sportsman’s Club is planning to have a Boat Safety Course.

Chris Ziemba reported that a new organization, Residents for a Healthy Lake Carey, has been formed. Its purpose is to protect the lake water, well water, and the watershed. For more information, contact Minturn Smith.

Old Business

Responding to a question about the dam, Ed reported that the inspection of the dam was completed with no violations noted. It was suggested that we follow through with the 2007 recommendations. Dr. Givler will survey the dam.

Kathy Keefe questioned how much the catch basins would help in filtering the water entering the lake. Ed said that they would be helpful during storms.

Ed mentioned that the gas drilling has started in the vicinity and there were many more wells that Chesapeake will be starting in the future. He recommended that we have our wells tested. Chris said that he would include that information on the website.

After a motion by Arthur Orloski, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Ginny Tinner, secretary
